My Musical Extravaganza

2002-12-04 - 11:37 a.m.

Justly inspired by the ravings of Lester Bangs, and the perusing of various other review sites, I've decided to grace my gentle readers with a list.

Not just any ole list, mind you. Don't let your delicate head suffer confusion, it is simply a combined conglomerate of the best albums [so says I] from this very year, as well as some added extras for your stocking.

I refuse to put them in order. I don't play favorites.

[Drumroll, please...]

The Flaming Lips/ Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots: Wayne Coyne is my god. [Does that count as playing favorites?]

Wilco/ Yankee Hotel Foxtrot: Alt.country makes me all warm inside.

The Notwist/ Neon Golden: Lazy afternoons when the sun is setting.

Ugly Casanova/ Sharpen Your Teeth: Chaos makes symphonies out of the simplest things.

Ms. John Soda/ No P. or D.:Electronica for the smart kids.

Sigur Ros/ (): Crafted sleep music, beautiful and haunting.

DJ Shadow/ The Private Press: Though not as good as Entroducing..., he still kicks the collective asses of 98% of music "creators".

David Cross/ Shut Up You Fucking Baby!: Shit, if pitchfork counts this as music, so can I.

Ben Kweller/ Sha Sha: Poppy, catchy, sing-a-longy.

Ok, that's my top 8. Sorry, but it was slim pickins' this year.

Now, for my massive disappointments of 2002 [this is the fun part] Also, of course there were more than these 2, but why dwell on the negative?

Badly Drawn Boy/ Have You Fed the Fish?: There should be a law against the Boy being happy. His misery music is so much better.

Doug Martsch/ Now You Know: I could create some stupid pun, like "Now you know...stay away from the crappy caucasian pseudo bluegrass, Doug." You have to remember, you're white. Repeat after me: I am indie. This is what I know. I will stick with what I actually know.

And my newfound glories:

The Jam

The Velvet Underground

All Time Quarterback

It's been quite the year.
