It's All in the O

2003-01-23 - 2:01 p.m.

My mother has this uncanny ability to completely mispronounce and therefore massacre a word.

The other day, as we drove, she gesturedf wildly to a helicopter stationary in the air.

"Look! Look at the helicopter!"

"Uh. yeah, mom. Can you maybe look! at the road?"

"But it's...hoovering!"

No, folks, I didn't add an extra o by accident. Like the vacuum. Say it with me now. Hoover.

This isn't the first time, either. She'd be thisclose to me, and I'd look over, glaring.

"What? Am I hoovering again?"

Not unless you suddenly became a vacuum when I wasn't looking.

"Hover! Like cover! Rhymes with cover!", I'd shriek. "Not like the vacuum!"

"Oh. I thought you were saying like the vacuum. I always get it mixed up..."

Now I think she just does it on purpose to kill me slowly.
