Ted Leo is my Dream Lova'

2003-07-28 - 2:54 p.m.

Perhaps this may come as a disturbing confession, but I really do like Stephen King. Don't get me wrong here, I can sit down and enjoy a sweet media/ cultural manifesto just like all the other snobs out there. There's just something about S.K.'s books that are really trashy.

I totally dig trashy.

They are bloody and sexy and full of nothing and everything. Repulsive and impulsive and they draw you in until you need to read just a couple more pages of shooting and gore. Which inevitably turns into a hundred pages. I picked up Needful Things for the 4 hour car ride home and I averaged a little over 100 pages an hour. [My mom drove]

I also just finished Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs by Chuck Klosterman. Thought provoking in a way that chapters dedicated to the cultural impact of the Real World can only be. And John Cusack.

This writerman, who is very funny, also did about 6,000 pieces in the newest issue of Spin. [Please don't misunderstand, I would never pay for that magazine. I just had to see how they justify putting the White Stripes on the cover for the millionth time. They didn't.] Here's an archived one: http://www.spin.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=83&mode=&order=&thold=

Picked up the Fountains of Wayne cd 'Welcome Interstate Managers'. It's funnny because I had been hearing nothing but pure unadulterated praise a couple of weeks before I finally bought it. Bit of a disappointment. It's fun, and poppy, and it makes undeniable depressing statements about the current state of our society, but...well, the third song is called 'Stacy's Mom.' And it sounds just like it...sounds. So, while I appreciate catchy choruses and pop culture commentary, I can't erase the impression of song #3.

Work is the new vacation. It's a relief to get away from the gift shop life. The monotony of shell bangles can't be fully described by the english language.

"But you've never been a waste of my time

It's never been a drag

So take a deep breath and count back from ten

And maybe you'll be alright"

Too hard to work backwards.
